The Story of King Shibi
In the ancient land of Bharat, there reigned a king whose name was spoken with reverence for his unwavering commitment to righteousness. Disguised as a wandering sage, the god Agni, known for his fiery nature, took the form of a weary pigeon. At the same time, the god Indra, king of the heavens, transformed into a majestic falcon.
The pigeon, frail and exhausted, sought refuge in the lap of King Shibi. The king, moved by compassion, gently cradled the pigeon, offering it solace and safety. The pigeon, sensing the king’s kindness, rested on his lap, seemingly relieved from its plight.
However, the tranquility was soon disrupted as the falcon appeared. With sharp, predatory eyes, the falcon descended gracefully and landed before King Shibi. It was clear that the falcon was not merely a bird but a divine being testing the king’s commitment to righteousness.
The falcon addressed King Shibi with a commanding tone. “O King Shibi, this pigeon is my prey. It has sought refuge in your lap, but I demand it back. Its flesh is necessary to satisfy my hunger.”
King Shibi, deeply troubled by the predicament, looked at the innocent pigeon and then at the imposing falcon. He was faced with a difficult decision: to uphold his duty to protect those who sought refuge under his care or to fulfill the falcon’s demands.
Despite the intense pressure, King Shibi chose to honor his commitment to protect the helpless pigeon. “O noble falcon,” he said, “I understand your hunger and the natural order, but this pigeon has come to me for sanctuary. I cannot simply hand it over.”
The falcon insisted, “If you refuse to give up the pigeon, you must provide a substitute. I demand that you sacrifice a part of your own flesh to satisfy my hunger.”
Determined to uphold his principles, King Shibi agreed to the falcon’s demand. He instructed his royal physicians to prepare for the sacrifice and, with unwavering resolve, began to cut a portion of flesh from his thigh. However, despite his sacrifice, the pigeon seemed no lighter. The weight of the pigeon remained unchanged, indicating that the divine test was far from over.
King Shibi, recognizing the gravity of the challenge, continued to offer more flesh from his body. His commitment to dharma and his compassion for the pigeon drove him to the brink of exhaustion. As the king’s own body grew weaker, he finally realized that the only way to satisfy the falcon’s hunger was to offer his entire self.
In a final act of supreme sacrifice, King Shibi prepared to offer his entire body to the falcon. As he lay down ready to give his life, a divine light illuminated the scene. The gods, deeply moved by King Shibi’s unwavering commitment to righteousness and his selfless sacrifice, revealed themselves in their true celestial forms.
Agni, in his divine splendor, appeared and restored the pigeon to its original divine form. Indra, as the falcon, also revealed his true celestial presence. They were greatly pleased with King Shibi’s dedication and his readiness to sacrifice himself for the sake of dharma.
“O King Shibi,” the gods declared, “your virtue and selflessness have surpassed our expectations. Your willingness to offer your very self to uphold righteousness is truly remarkable.”
The gods then performed a miraculous act. They restored King Shibi’s body to its original, healthy state. His flesh was healed, and he was fully restored to his former self, robust and strong. The gods blessed him with their divine favor and praised his extraordinary virtue.
The tale of King Shibi’s sacrifice and divine test spread throughout the land, becoming a timeless legend of righteousness and selflessness. His story was recounted in songs and stories, inspiring countless generations to uphold the highest principles of dharma and compassion.
King Shibi continued to rule his kingdom with wisdom and justice, his legacy forever honored by his people. His story served as a beacon of virtue, reminding all who heard it of the power of selflessness and the enduring values of righteousness.
